Billion-year-old slime mold meets the hyperconsumerist logic of vaping devices. How do they negotiate? X.S. Hou constructs material systems where cosmological, industrial, and organic orders are forced into contact. These entanglements are materialized through silk, bioplastics, salvaged debris, and living organisms.
Hou collaborates with Physarum polycephalum slime molds to create works on silk that explore conceptions of wuwei, agency, and constraint. Hou's sculptural works and immersive environments use bioplastics, foraged metals, discarded vapes, sensors, and electronics to re-discover the sanctity of physical matter.
They have exhibited at ONX (Onassis Foundation), Jewett Art Center, Offline Gallery, Plexus Projects, Fourth World Festival, and _p_a_l_l_a_s. Their work has been featured in Artnet, ArtNews, Whitehot Magazine, and more.
